Volunteering as counsellors

At YCS we have various opportunities to be involved including student counsellor placements, qualified counsellor volunteering and operational volunteering.

Please read below for further information and get in touch if you have any questions or want to apply.

Volunteers - Student counsellors

YCS provides placements for student counsellors, which helps us offer low-cost services while supporting the next generation of mental health professionals.

As a student counsellor on placement with us you will need to:

  • Be training to qualify to Level 4 or above & working towards a full qualification in counselling or psychotherapy.

  • Be able to travel to our central Cardiff office and/or work online across Wales.

  • Be able to commit to initially seeing at least 3 clients, on a weekly basis. We will offer more client hours as you progress.

  • Attend a comprehensive induction programme and twice-yearly placement review meetings.

  • Attend in house supervision (we realise that supervision can be costly, and we offer low cost supervision at £30 per month).

Students and Volunteer counsellors play a vital part in our success and provide a much-needed service for people who otherwise may not be able to access counselling. We recruit on ongoing basis for placements and volunteer counsellors.

"I am thoroughly enjoying my placement at YCS. The support from the staff has been amazing and the in house supervision is invaluable! There are also many opportunities to get CPD training to further your training. I would recommend YCS to any trainee counsellor!"

"The staff are lovely and very supportive, the supervision is very supportive and there is plenty of it. I have really enjoyed my time volunteering and there are plenty of CPD opportunities to expand on your learning."

Volunteers - qualified counsellors

We currently deliver a low-cost counselling service provided wholly by volunteers, some are fully qualified counsellors, others are on placement and in the later stages of counselling training. As we expand, we are looking to recruit more qualified volunteers to meet the growing demand of clients on our waiting list.

We aim to provide evidence-based support to under-represented members of the community by providing counselling services.

We are keen to develop a diverse volunteer group with a broad skills base so that we can offer a range of counselling approaches.

We are particularly interested in recruiting volunteers who can offer:

  • CBT

  • Solution- Focused Brief Therapy

  • Other therapeutic approaches

  • Both in person and online counselling

In addition, we are interested in volunteers from under-represented groups and volunteers who are multilingual.

To apply to volunteer with us you must be:

  • Qualified to level 4 or above in counselling or psychotherapy.

  • Be able to commit to initially seeing a minimum of 2 clients, on a weekly basis.
